Lester B. Boner – Farmboy turned aircraft mechanic

Image

Looking through my B-24 service and instruction manuals, they have great cartoons about an inept serviceman , Lester B. Boner. WW2 saw the USAAF grow from a small organization to the largest airforce in the world. To catch up with the production of planes the military had to train farm boys, car mechanics and anyone else they could get their hands on to maintain the planes. Hence the manual were written in an easy to read form complete with cartoons. [ Below – Lester off to wash down his B-24 Liberator]

Lester B. Boner is one of those Guys,

Who tries to impress you on being wise.

As a technician he’s not so bright,

He makes no effort to see if he’s right.

On critical jobs he’s so likely to fail,

We can trust him only with mop and pail.

B-24D “Who’s Next ?”  was part of the 63rd Squadron, 43rd Bomb Group [H], 5th Army Airforce [AAF] and was based from late ’44 out of Tacloban, Leyte. In March ’45 it operated out of Clark Field, Pampanga. Some of the ground crew [pictured below] would have worked on the aircraft and used Lester Boner’s advise to avoid making mistakes.
